Introducing the St. Louis Blues!

Well, ok, my version of it, from the Cycle Like the Sedins uber re-draft. I had a bunch of frontloaded picks, so I finished first - there's no prize for that, though. And yes, you do see a lot of Blues and Thrashers on here, but I wasn't being a homer. Believe it or not, no one took Slava until the 5th round, and he was the best remaining at his position. Ditto with Little, and ditto with Toby. This further proves the age old theory that if your team sucks, people assume everyone on it does as well, so they never pick them. HA. And yes, I know I have Little at center, but he's eligible to play that position, and I needed one. Lemme alone.

My 4th line is the way that it is because everyone was pretty much taken by that point, and I figured hey, if I can't beat 'em, I'll beat the hell out of them. You know, for fun. That, and Steen can be fairly productive.

Two #1 goalies? Well, come on. Yes. Why? It's just CYA, plain and simple. That, and Byrz is pretty highly ranked in NHL10, and so's Bobby Lou. Other teams can't take advantage of the fact that my "backup" is in.

If you could afford Byrz, would you want LaBarbera for your backup?

Wait. An evenhanded prediction for the season?

From ESPN and Buccigross? No. Freaking. Way.

Actually he says nothing in this assessment that isn't true or that the fans haven't said a bazillion times. He recognizes that we have offense and how high we finished in GF last season. He notices our top four an the fact that they're good. But, he also emphasizes that since Anderson's system is offensively minded, the defense lacks, leading to high SOG and GA. Actually, what leads to a high GA is probably our lack of a goaltender that's consistent and healthy... which he mentions too.

Anyone else cringe when he pointed out that we could have had Nash or Bouwmeester? Or, as I've mentioned before, Cam Ward? Yeesh.

Ahh, the beauty of hindsight. The one way that I can have 20/20 vision.

Redemption.

No, not really for the team, but for the marketing department. After impressing us with a cardboard theme (are they implying that we're going to move or something, or just need to put stuff in storage?), they put together this pretty sweet opening night video.

Nice... even though I have no idea what the Hockey Way is, but apparently we didn't follow it for a good chunk of last season. We kind of followed the "Flailing Around the Ice" Way. I really don't think it'll start that way this year. Of course, who knows, since we don't have a legit #1 goalie yet again (see how I worked that in?). I also liked how they worked Kovalchuk into the logo, because, you know, why not have someone you're not going to re-sign and that you're going to trade to Boston in some magical, mythical trade that exists in a land where there is no salary cap? Make sense to me. /sarc

He's staying, people. Cope with it. He wants to play here, he said it again today during the golf tourney, and will say it in every interview until hockey vultures stop having to ask it.

Making a good impression...

Well, I guess it was a good impression. Or, well, the Blues pissed off a neutral country known for meatballs. The Blues dispatched the Linkoping HC of the Swedish Elite League 6-0, with goals from Perron, Cola(!), Berglund, Kariya (2), and Steen.

Believe it or not, the Blues used all three goalies (Mason, Conklin, and Bishop) in the game, and each turned in a stellar shut out period.

Next game is Friday at 3:00 (2:00 Central) against Detroit. Of course, because DirecTV hates hockey fans, I won't be able to see it. Luckily, they're broadcasting it on the scoreboard at Scottrade Center, so you guys can see it there... I guess I'll just have to go to Imagination Land to see it.

One other signing of note...

What? I did nuttin.

The Thrashers signed defenseman Marc Popovic to fill in at 7th defenseman. At the rate Boris is going, he'll probably be on the 3rd pairing w/Salmela in no time flat.

Our line-up is basically set, except for trying to figure out how long Kane stays up here and who gets moved to the 3rd line: The Todd, Pevs, or Koz.

Mad Max and a bad Oyster

Wait... so I don't have to wear a rabid banana slug anymore? Score!

Apparently according to Custance, we've signed Maxim Afinogenovto a one year, $800,000 offer. Damn, DW. You get me all pissed off at you for the goalie stuff, and then you turn around and pull this. Now we ice three scoring lines and a checking line. Unreal. WE HAVE DEPTH!!

Oystrick, though, has been placed on waivers to be sent back to the Wolves. I guess Pops was the better option after all. I like how he's played this pre-season. I sense Boris in the pressbox a few times.

Well, this is trite.

I decided to take my anger yesterday at the Thrashers dumping Manny (reasoning be damned, I say!) out on DirecTV, again, regarding the fact that I'm missing the Blues/Wings game that Versus is televising. Here's what I wrote:

I'm just writing to express my dismay that this problem hasn't been
rectified yet. The beginning of the hockey season is October 1st, and
despite the fact that I have Center Ice, I'm still going to miss the
Detroit/St. Louis game that is live from Stockholm. Seeing as how I'm not
in the St. Louis metro area, the fact that I have to miss five of my teams'
games due to blackout thanks to Vs' inane broadcast rights is a bit
annoying. The fact that I'm missing one of the biggest events in my teams'
recent history is extremely disappointing.

I absolutely do not want to drop DirecTV and switch to Dish just for one
network - that's stupid. But I am disappointed that I'm spending $140 for
Center Ice and am still missing a huge number of regular season games. If
Versus didn't air the NHL, I couldn't care less if you guys carried them or
not. As it stands, so many hockey fans are going to miss so many games, a
lot of whom can't afford Center Ice like I can. It's insane to think that
I'll have to squint at my computer at an on-line feed of a game when I
should be able to watch it on my TV in high def and with stereo surround
sound. My MacBook's got good speakers, but they're not THAT good.

Please keep working to rectify this problem. I know hockey fans are a small
minority of your subscribers, but we're fiercely loyal to the sport and our
teams; more so than fans of other sports. I know of a lot of people who
have switched to Dish just for this one network.

Ok, so you would expect something somewhat well thought out in return. No. I got the exact same form letter that I got when I complained about it a few months ago.

Thanks for writing. I see that you have been a loyal DIRECTV customer for many years, I just want to let you know that we appreciate your business.

I understand your concern about Versus. Unfortunately, Versus is no longer available on DIRECTV. Comcast, the largest cable company in the U.S. and our largest competitor, owns the channel and has forced us to pull it down. Here is the situation.

DIRECTV was already paying Comcast more than any other non-Comcast distributor to air Versus - and now Comcast is demanding an overall rate hike of 20% on top of that. Comcast also forces DIRECTV to make Versus available to a much larger portion of our customer base at our own expense than they require from other TV providers - most notably, DISH Network. We simply cannot accept these unfair and outrageous terms. All we're asking from Comcast is equal treatment.

Comcast and Versus are currently engaged in a noisy publicity campaign to distract attention from the fact that they are trying to take advantage of DIRECTV and our customers. The bottom line is this, if we were to accept their unreasonable demands, we would have no choice but to pass on the increase in cost to our valued customers. We do not want this to happen, especially in these difficult economic times. That's why we're standing firm in our negotiations with Comcast.

Regardless, we will continue to work in good faith with Comcast to try to reach a fair and just settlement. Our commitment to deliver the best TV service for the best price is and has always been our first priority. We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this time.

DIRECTV still leads the industry in sports programming, whether or not we have Versus in our channel lineup. For college football, NHL hockey and other sports, here's just a brief list of what's available on DIRECTV:

College football: Available on Big Ten Network, CBS College Sports, ESPN, ESPNU, ESPN GamePlan, The Mtn., local channels and your RSN.
NHL: Available on NHL Network, NHL Center Ice, and your RSN.
Mixed Martial Arts: Available on HDNet, Spike TV, and UFC on DIRECTV Pay Per View.
Auto Racing: Available on IRL on ABC, Formula 1 on Fox and Speed.
Bull riding: Available on ESPN2 and the Houston Rodeo on DIRECTV Pay Per View
Hunting and fishing: Available on ESPN2, The Sportsman Channel, The Outdoor Channel, and Pursuit TV.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at versus@directv.com.

If you didn't notice, I never mentioned college football, MMA, Auto Racing, BULL RIDING, and hunting and fishing in my e-mail. I don't watch Versus for anything but hockey, and these dillweeds are missing the point... Versus has exclusive broadcast rights to a lot of these games. We can't see them on NHL Network or Center Ice. WE CAN'T SEE THEM. That's kind of the point.

If you're a reader of my blog and a DirecTV subscriber and would like to participate in an experiment, please, feel free to e-mail DirecTV and see what kind of response you get.

Figures.

The first pre-season game we play, we win and win well, and no one's there to see it (and that fact gets documented on Puck Daddy). Yesterday, we actually have a pretty decent crowd (they ran out of soft pretzels. I mean, come ON) and we play probably the worst game of the preseason aside for the first one.

What separates that game against the Preds from yesterday's game against the Lightning? Oh, that the former featured AHLers, and the latter featured this line-up:

Forwards:

Kovalchuk- Antropov- Little
Kozlov- White- Afinogenov
Kane- Reasoner- Peverley
Boulton- Slater- Thorburn

Defense:

Enstrom- Bogosian
Valabik- Kubina
Salmela- Popovic

Goalies:

Pavelec
Hedberg

That, ladies and gentlemen, is basically our starting line-up for the year. Valabik was paired with Kubina instead of Hainsey being with Kubina, and the result was... um... *sigh* Boris this pre-season has been absolutely horrible, and yesterday was no exception. He got laid out by a guy a foot shorter than him, started a stupid fight, got a ten-minute instigator for fighting right off the whistle (did he not get that memo? It's not like it hasn't been everywhere), and was not so hot on the PK. Kubina tried to keep him focused much as Hainsey did last year, by yelling at him, but that didn't work.

Our penalty kill in general was abysmal, going 3/6. Yes, we were on the PK six times. One of those times was caused by Pavelec and his lack of puck handling skills. He crossed into the trapezoid zone of no, and got a delay of game call. Of course, we were scored on.

Pavs' stickhandling and puck control make Kari look like Marty Turco in a good year. Very poor rebound control. Several stops he made either didn't stop all the way and rolled in, or he stopped and deflected right to a Bolt parked in front of the goal. He let in 5 of 26 shots. Not a good showing for someone who needed to shine tonight. He's been given the most playing time this postseason out of all of the goalies (Legace the least). He's shown a few times that he doesn't have the mental focus to stay in a game for the whole 60 minutes. If we have a bad night like we had last night, and he's our last line of defense, I don't trust him to rise above the situation. Heck, we had a good night against the Preds, and he still let in 4 goals, three of which were very, very weak.

Cuts might be coming today (Fritsche was released today), and I like so many others are anxious about their choice in goal. Waddell said at the Fan Club meeting yesterday that they were in talks with Manny's agent, which is great. Honestly, though, he's the one who needs to start opening night. Pavs needs a few more years to get his head on straight before he can perform at this level.

Wait, what? Doesn't my resume count for anything? Yeah, I forgot to mention last season, but...

EDIT: Apparently DW and JA disagree, because Manny was just released on waivers. Mark my words, this is going to be a HUGE mistake. We finally have a solid NHL line-up again, and we're starting the year with the Boy Wonder in goal. Fan-freaking-tastic. A vast majority of Thrashers fans are actually pretty livid. Manny made a huge impact at camp, played well in the Carolina game, and actually gave us hope that we'd have a REAL STARTING GOALTENDER. Thanks.

Blues Sign Sydor.

Continuing the apparent trend of trading players we don't want with the Stars, we signed Darryl Sydor to a one year, $1 million contract, presumably to be a mentor to Petro. It seems that our D is a go. Johnson, Petro, Sydor, Cola, Jackman, and Polak, with Weaver as the 7th guy (6th if Petro gets sent back to juniors after the 9 game try-out). I like how that looks. When healthy, Sydor's still got gas in the tank and should be a good asset to the team.

Blues and Thrashers News and Notes.

David Perron seems to be out of the doghouse(s) he was in last year. Apparently part of it was maturity, not so much play.

Cam smash! Cam smash! Cam... score?

The Thrashers bring back Steve MacCarthy from the Ducks for picks to be discussed later. He's starting off with the Wolves, but between him and having Pops back... party like it's 2006 up in here.

Manny's still being a ray of sunshine in Thrashers' camp. Shame his bi-polar self couldn't've managed that last season.

Praise JEEBUS!

I just got home from the first home pre-season game of the Thrashers' season. Luckily, I made it there in one piece, considering that I thought I was going to have to build a damn ark to make it down to Philips thanks to the downpours of the past week. Crowd was sparse because of the weather - and before you say something like "Pfft, duh," no. It really WAS the weather. Every metro Atlanta school district is closing tomorrow because of flooding.

Got a chance to talk to Bill Tiller (AKA Rawhide) before the game during warm-ups. Always nice to see him - if you get a sec to read his blog, I completely suggest it. Chatted about Legace's chances for making the team. We pretty much agree that Pavs needs to go down one more year, and that Legace's got a really good chance to be our starting goalie on opening night. Manny looked sharp during the warm-ups. Very strong glove side, and *very* fast - faster than I've probably seen him move in a long time. He also looked like he was having a blast. Jarring to not see him in his usual number 34 - he was wearing 29 because Peter Mannino has 34, and weird to see him with a mostly blank mask save for the breast cancer ribbon on the back.

Apparently the irritation about Kari that was shown at the town hall by Don Waddell spilled over to the next morning at the Season Ticket Holders' breakfast, where he reiterated pretty forcefully that he is not a lock for #1. I think some people are still irritated about the delay in having his surgery, which is inexplicable and fairly selfish.

The game was actually a pretty good one considering the wonky line-ups that the Canes and Thrashers had out there. The Kubina-Hainsey experiment didn't last very long, since Hainsey left early with a lower body injury (as did Armstrong), but from what I saw it looked pretty solid. It looked really solid when Kubina scored the first goal of the game. I have never noticed on TV how big he is, but he is built like a house - Antropov as well. Our team grew about 20lbs on average this off-season.

The player that caught my eye the most was defenseman Paul Postma. There's a strong chance that he will be returned to his WHL team (or possibly the Wolves - I think he's old enough now), but wow. You can tell how he lead the WHL in defenseman scoring a few years back. He is *quick* - probably as quick as most of our forwards. Very good stickhandling skills as well.

Vernace and Popovic were the random odd men out defensive pair. I really didn't notice a huge amount about Vernace, but Pops looked either unsure or lazy out there on a few plays. He wound up as the #2 star of the game, so apparently he wasn't that bad - but he could have been a lot sharper. One would think that considering this is a try-out for him he'd be busting his butt.

The Kovy-Antropov-Little line was successful on a Bryan Little goal in the 3rd. Koz-White-Peverley was together as well again, and they had a few chances, but just couldn't seem to convert on any of them. It is always nice to see Slater score, though. He tries so hard - he needs to be rewarded once in a while.

Moose looked like... well... Moose. Good stickhandling, good puck clearance - nice up-ice play. The two goals he allowed were the usual weird ones. The first goal was one that he had no chance to get to at all unless he was Stretch Armstrong (or Ben Bishop). The second one was the bizarre bounce that we come to expect at least once a game. It wasn't his strongest game ever, but Moose has always been our best goaltender against Carolina, and he wound up snagging another win, 4-1.

Wednesday night's game is at home against the Nashville Predators. Hopefully the skies'll part for a second and more people can get down there to watch the game. My guess is Legace's in net, so I'll have some more updates on that situation. As far as tonight's game, if you weren't there, you can just read Ben Wright's live blog, or catch the post-game press conference with Coach John Anderson.

Aw, gone so soon?

Thrashers made some more cuts - Espo is one of quite a few players sent to the Wolves. Disappointing, because I wanted to see him Monday night. Peter Mannino is also to be sent down to the Wolves, which means that the goalie carousel is down to Moose, Legace, MacIntyre, and Pavs, with Kari probably starting the year on IR (insert gasp here).

Also, and this isn't Thrashers related, it's Blues' related, but there's a great write-up in the Post-Dispatch over the fighting styles of Cam Janssen and DJ King. Hysterical stuff.

I always appreciate positive team news.

It's disheartening for me to see negative stories on the Thrashers, because so many of them unfounded. They're written by people who don't bother to pay attention to the team, who don't bother to watch the team. They have no right to say what they do about us, but they do anyway, because they're "experts." You know, the experts who predict Kovalchuk bolting... after he's built a huge house here, or since his agent is flying in week after next for a specific reason (from what I have gathered). I always enjoy getting to prove those people wrong, and we will this season.

My other team, my original team, and still my favorite team, the Blues, had to deal with much of the same thing for three years. No one paid attention to the storied history of the franchise. They had a bad owner, bad team... no one cared. And then Dave Checketts and John Davidson came along. They started rebuilding brick by brick, drafting excellent young talent and getting skilled forwards to guide the team. But still, everyone at the beginning of the last season picked them for, or close to, the bottom of the standings for the Western Conference.

Well, all I have to say to that is "Hey experts. Yeah. Good job. You really used all of the 'evidence' you found to prove the Blues'd suck to good use, huh?" Yeah. Sixth in the West, third in the Central. Sorry, everyone. We were good.

So, it stands to reason that this season all I have seen have been glowing team previews, like this one from The Hockey News that I found in my inbox this AM (and yes, I did kind of go *squee* when I saw Paul Kariya. What?). Praise for last season, praise for the young kids like Oshie, Perron, and Berglund, who before the hockey pundits only felt were going to try to grow into roles on the team, not assume them this year. Admiration for the vets like Walt and McDonald who people had just cast off as broken and old. Talking about adding parts without having to do anything since we have Kariya and Johnson back this season. So on and so forth. The vibe is positive, both inside St. Louis and out. I absolutely adore seeing my team in the press, and every time I read a positive prediction I grin ear to ear.

But there's still something disingenuous about it. Where were these people, both media and fans, when the Blues struggled after the lockout? Where were they last season at the start, and the season before last, when we had solid building blocks and we were actually showing that we could succeed in the future? Fawning over the Red Wings. Or, really, fawning over the Blackhawks, who were probably a year ahead of the Blues in development.

Hm. You know, it's delicious when people collectively realize that sometimes what's said to be the best really isn't. That trendy new expensive restaurant? The food's underwhelming. That's happened to everyone at some time. You would think that they would realize that it can apply to other things as well. Teams like the Blackhawks are that. They hype is awesome. The team (or food) when you look at it is amazing. You just can't wait to dig in. And then, after a few first pretty good bites, you realize that something is kinda off. You eat it to be polite, and then you make a decision to probably not come back unless you have a coupon.

The Blues are that awesome hole in the wall place that's spread around by word of mouth... great food, great service, of course - great drinks. Fun atmosphere, and really good people.

And I guarantee you that the Thrashers will be the same this season. Little... Bogosian... Enstrom... Peverley. So many people either don't know, or don't notice these names. You will. You'll notice them and the rest of the roster. You'll notice how well they're starting to learn to play together.

Word of mouth'll spread. Apparently Kovy's gotten a hold of it. Consider him the food critic. The review'll be out soon, and I'm pretty sure that it's going to be to his liking.

Pre-season starts and a camp addition?

Tonight's the first pre-season game of the season, against the Nashville Predators, in Nashville. No cool on-line in-arena feed like the Oil/Isles game last night, so we get to listen to Dan Kamal on 680 The Fan - which to me is probably preferable.

Also, per Ben Wright's Twitter feed (and I'll post a link once it's up on the Thrashers' website), Maxim Afinogenov (who was just 6-14-20 and a -7 last season with the Sabres) will be joining the Thrashers in camp. This really makes me curious of what's going on, especially with our third line. Competition for that spot is apparently going to be a nightmare.

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Quick FYI.

The Hockey News (earning some serious brownie points) has a list of the top 10 d-men under 25. Zach Bogosian is number six, ahead of Marc Staal, Brent Burns, Braydon Coburn (HA), and Brent Seabrook.

There is a reason I drafted him in three of the five fantasy teams I run (the other two he was taken too damn fast). And it's not because he's Armenian too.

Entirely.

Actually, I have noticed that he and Enstrom are completely overlooked in drafts. Well... at least to the later rounds. Z-Bo is started by 75% on Yahoo, while Toby is started by 28%. Hm. Sorry. This year, after what I saw last season, they're BOTH getting started at the same time for me.

Also, Little's started in 23% of the Yahoo teams, because apparently owners are dumb. I snagged him in the TWELFTH ROUND of one of my drafts. Honestly. Sometimes there are perks of being a fan of a team that didn't perform well last season. You get to know the underdogs really well.

Town Hall Recap.

He of the black turtleneck, Don Waddell, had reason to be more upbeat at this town hall than he usually has. He has had an outstanding offseason.

Hosted by Dan Kamal, the town hall this year involved John Anderson, Rick Dudley, Waddell, and Colby Armstrong - who was apparently there for comedic relief. No real hostile questions were asked - no one accused Don of anything near incompetence. Nice.

Waddell mentioned a few things that were interesting. He said that improvements are in the works for the jumbotron and a few other things in the arena. Apparently they've been reading our complaints on the message boards.

He reiterated that the #1 goalie job really is up for grabs, and pretty much implied that's why Legace had been invited to camp. He seemed a little exasperated explaining Kari and the surgery, and said that he had been approached by people around draft time about a trade for one of our goalies. Waddell mentioned, though, that what they wanted to give us in return were picks and prospects, and nothing to help us now. Waddell's reasoning behind declining the offers is that he wanted immediate improvement, and realized how we were tired of hearing how we have building blocks and so forth. Good call, because while I always appreciate the selection or acquisition of a good prospect, I would really like to see this team win now. And in the future. Yes - they both can be done!

Waddell also said that he's glad that they didn't do a deal, since Kari wound up having surgery in July (and according to an AM 550 Toronto interview probably won't be able to start on opening night - *gasp*). There's a real battle heating up there.

We didn't sign Zherdev because there was too much "What about Kane?" talk. Waddell would like to see Kane make the big club and he has been given every chance to do so. He's apparently put on 20 lbs or so since prospect camp, which was necessary. Waddell just didn't want him to go out against guys who were 230 and get roughed up.

And there's one other thing... what was it... oh.

Right.

That Kovalchuk guy.

We've been going back and forth with him since the end of last season, and talks have increased since he came back from the Russian Olympic camp. There have been offers and counter offers made, which is a good sign - especially since Hossa's agent didn't even bother. Kovy was drafted by us, is the Thrashers' captain, and knows that this is his team. Waddell says that he wants to lead us and make sure that we succeed, and that his attitude so far at camp has been overwhelmingly upbeat and positive, and it's rubbing off on everyone.

Also, he and his wife are expecting their third child, and he just built a huge house in Buckhead that's probably worth more than I can imagine. His daughter's starting pre-school. Is this the signs of someone who is counting the days until he can get out of here?

Yeah. Thought so. Hey media naysayers - go fixate on the 'Yotes or Kessel or something. Kovy's not a story, so stop inventing stuff. Thanks.

Snip Snip.

The roster's been cut down to let the kids on their WHL/OHL/QMJHL teams get back for the start of the season. Alas Jeremy Morin. We hardly knew ye.

Ben's got the press release up. We have 46 left on the camp roster... six of which are goalies. The fun continues!

The afore mentioned Blues re-cap kind of thing. Maybe.

To celebrate the news that Andy Murray has been given an additional year on his contract, the Blues decided to go out and knock the Wild around Scottrade all night. It seemed to be a physical game... Derek Armstrong (working to make the squad) had a Gordie Howe hat trick, so I'm sure that the coaches caught that. Darryl Sydor had to take someone to task for running Petro after the whistle. David Perron got into a fight (!)... and WON (!!). And. well... there's always Cam Janssen, hometown hero.

10:56 STL Cam Janssen : Hooking – 2 min
15:55 STL Cam Janssen served by Aaron Palushaj : Instigator – 2 min
15:55 STL Cam Janssen : Misconduct (10 min) – 0 min
15:55 STL Cam Janssen : Fighting (maj) – 5 min
15:44 STL Cam Janssen : Misconduct (10 min) – 0 min

Boxscore:
Time on Ice – 0 6:07
PIM – 29
I really hate to break it to DJ King, but I think Cam's our default enforcer. Sorry, kiddo. Ben Bishop sounded (and I hate saying that, but the game was only on the radio) like he was making some really solid saves, especially in the 2nd and 3rd, where Minny started to outshoot us.

Apparently they incorporate offense into their new system. Weird.

Anywho, it wasn't a sold out crowd, but from the sounds on the radio when the Blues scored, it was a crowd that appreciated the fact that the guys were back, and even with the hybrid Baby Blues/Vets team they had out there, still played a solid game. Here's to hoping that the resurgence of hockey in St. Louis is permanent, so we don't have to deal with bandwagon fans popping up every 10 years or so. Just sayin'.

Just really quick before I hit the hay...

There should be a Thrashers town hall recap up here sometime tomorrow (and it's *positive* - I know, right?). Very nice set up this year, BTW. I actually like how they did it tonight vs. the other town hall set ups in the past.

I just got done listening to the Blues beat the Wild(s) 3-1 in their first preseason game. How jealous am I of everyone up there... I have to wait until Monday to go to a hockey game. That just seems so far away. Oh well... I've waited since April. I can make it five more days.

I am so thrilled that hockey season's back with us. I loved hearing the goal horn and "When the Blues Go Marchin' In." It's been too long... way too long. I might attempt some analysis tomorrow over at The Hockey Writers, if I'm functional.

Hopeful (!) Kovy News

In the on-line addition of the AJC, Chris Vivlamore mentioned very obviously the optimism that Kovalchuk has that he'll re-sign in Atlanta. Heck, if you missed it the first time, he published another article that mentions it too.

Asked if he is confident he’ll re-sign with the Thrashers, Kovalchuk said, “Yeah, hopefully because I’ve been here all my [professional] life. My family is excited to be here and my daughter is starting [pre-] school. Hopefully, we get it figured out.”

...

“I think we are way better than last year,” Kovalchuk said.

That last statement is extremely important. That was one of the goals for him re-signing. The team needed to improve. He's already seeing it before camp... I can't wait to see what he thinks once the season starts. The whole situation is far better than the Hossa problem, and is probably way better than a lot of big markets are hoping for, since everyone's visualized Kovy in their team colors.

Sorry. The guy wants to wear off-powder blue, maroon, gold, white, and... um... a fugly 10th anniversary patch.

Another interesting thing from the first article is what Anderson said about the goalie situation:

The other note of interest was Kari Lehtonen. He did not practice. He is still recovering from back surgery. There was no indication from coach John Anderson when he will return. In Lehtonen’s absence, finding a No. 1 goalie is a top priority of camp.

“Right now, he’s not in the mix,” Anderson said of Lehtonen. “Saying he’s No. 1, that’s not true. I’ll put him in when he’s actually ready, but right now the No. 1 job is up for grabs. Right now there are four guys that look really good out there.
“I want to make sure we get off to a good start and I want to establish a No. 1 goalie early on. If Kari is not here [finding a No. 1 goalie] is a priority of our training camp.”

Huh. So, if there's no Kari, basically, having everyone and their MOTHER at camp is basically a tryout for numero uno. We can surmise it won't be Moose, or probably not one of the 2 guys we brought in from free agency this summer. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't come down between Manny and Pavs. Frankly, if Manny plays like he did year before last, he's a lock. And, well... if we sign him to a contract for the season, and even if it's a 2 way one, that just leads to even more log jammin' (see what I did there?) at goal.

I'm still of the camp of that while I think Kari's a tremendous talent and a great goalie, we can't keep waiting on him to be healthy. If we have Legace going great guns, and something tweaks in his knee again, we have Pavs to step up, and Manny's usually back within a few weeks from that, not a month or two like Kari has been with his groin and back.

Quite a quandry we have there.

Remember that line-up I posted for my draft?

Add Ovie to it. Seriously. Someone traded me Ovie for Heatley. I felt the need to share, because I find that mildly hysterical.

That, and the fact that I am about ready to get revenge on my father for fantasy baseball this year in another league. Muhahaha.

Blues Roster is Also Out.

And, well, instead of trying to analyze it like I was going to... um... Game Time's already did that at some point (probably while I was still asleep this AM), so do yourself a favor and read it.

All training camp events are free and open to the general public, so head over to the Blues site, check out the sched (ignore that horribly scary photo of Murray, please), and print off a roster. Get there early, especially for the parts of camp held at St. Louis Mills, because it should be pretty darn crowded.

Thrashers Training Camp Roster is Out.

Ben published the camp roster earlier today. You guys can catch it over at the official Thrashers website. It's got a ton of guys listed... which we all pretty much know will probably *not* make the team. Really, the only slot up for grabs is the left wing on the third line. Other than that, we can probably pretty much predict the roster and line combos already.

We have seven (!) goalies competing for the positions, Lehtonen, Hedberg, Pavelec, Legace, MacIntyre, Mannino, and Josh Unice, who is there on an amateur tryout.

Hi, logjam. Makes me wonder why two guys not under contract with the team were brought in for camp. It really isn't necessary what with us having FIVE GOALIES FOR FOUR SPOTS under contract. Gee, wonder if Kari and Pavs are still not at 100%. Signs point to "duh."

Just a note - the Thrashers message boards are undergoing the switch over to the new, league wide format this weekend, so they're down.

Fallin' down on my job.

Yes, there's been news the past few days, and no, I haven't written about it because I've been sick.

Anywho, NHL.com has two write-ups on rookies set to make a splash this year: Evander Kane and Alex Pietrangelo. Kane has been absolutely tearing it up at the Traverse City tourney, despite the Thrashers going 2-2. There are still some reservations about him making the big club this year - like I mentioned, he needs to bulk up and the 7 lbs of muscle he added this summer isn't enough to keep him from getting smacked around like a ping-pong ball. Zach Bogosian had the physique of a man when he was 18. Kane's still very much a boy. Falconer pretty much analyzes this better than me, so please, read his summary of the situation.

John Davidson officially says heck no to Heatley. Praise God. I don't want him tainting both of my favorite teams with his egomania.

Because I know you people care about my fantasy team...

I just needed to either vent or brag on the quality of team I threw together. Of course, it's for a public league, so there's no way I'll put together one this good for any of my private leagues:

Goalies: Luongo & Hiller
D: Boumeester, Wideman, Enstrom, Montador
LW: Heatley, Gagne, Eriksson
C: Roy, Arnott, Oshie, Peverley
RW: Semin, Havlat, Little

Aww, yeah. Beat that, biotches. I will have an issue choosing what 2 RWs to ice every night, though. But really - that's not a bad pickle to have.

EDIT: Fair the well, Pevs Dispenser. I needed another goalie, and Conklin was left available. *sniff*

It's ok. If you tear it up this year I can always add you later because, honestly, no one'll pay any attention.

For Sale: One Currently Hilarious Hockey Puck

Had to share what I found on eBay:

A few Thrashers things...

The TV schedule is out. 21 games aren't aired (7 away, 14 home) which is always great. I'm guessing that there's some sort of overlap with SportSouth airing Hawks games or football stuff. Considering how atrocious the broadcast quality is of our games, and the fact that I'm getting Center Ice this year, I'll be more than happy to watch the opposition feed when I need to.

Also noted, JP Dellacamera is out, and Matt McConnell is in. So, we're going from weird playcalling dude to "I'M GONNA TALK OVER YOU DUDE." Swell.

Also from Pierre LeBrun over on ESPN.com, a look at the top potential free agents come the trade deadline (yeah, I know - early). Of course, Kovy's on there. There's some glimmer of hope - Don tossed an offer at Kovalchuk's agent, and the agent returned one. There's a time and an amount of money that Kovalchuk will play for in Atlanta - he doesn't hate us after all. Hossa never offered a counter offer. Here's hoping that something happens before the season starts... for Kovy to be throwing around offers before camp makes it see that he might be getting a little happier about the team's outlook this year.

And finally, Dan Kamal is on Twitter: @dankamal. Follow him for pretty darn up to the minute stuff.

Aw, c'mon, give him a shot!

'Tis the time of year where we hear about pros without contracts trying out for random squads. According to Jeremy Rutherford over at the Post-Dispatch, Darryl Sydor has been extended a pro tryout. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that this is to cover all the bases considering Brewer might be out for longer than estimated - there's still time to hurt his other knee.

The Thrashers are also inviting more than Manny to camp. Per Ben Wright, the Thrashers are inviting Dan Fritshe and former Thrasher Marc Popovic back to give it a shot. I understand Fritshe because we might very well have a hole on the third line. Pops I'm a little shocked about because we seem to have all the defensemen that we really need. Manny being invited still strikes me as indicative of something bigger going on.

Eh, oh well. Maybe I'll swing by camp one day... the schedule's out. Ahh, traffic from Cobb Co. to Duluth. FUN.

BTW, players on try-outs with the team can play in a preseason game, just FYI.

Dude.

I might to play with Kovy... and Antropov...and Kozlov... weeeee!

This is old news since someone posted it on the Thrashers boards yesterday, but Zherdev has a very interesting interview out with Sport Express pertaining to his future next year. Within it the OP, Shepherd, caught this gem:

- North-American press assumes that you could nicely complement Kovlachuk and Antropov in Atlanta
- Yes. The most serious conversation is going on with the Thrashers. Although, threre are other options. Personally, I would like to come to Atlanta, where several good Russian players are. It would be more pleasant and comfortable to play with them.

- Have you discussed it with Kovalchuk?
- We are preparing for a new season together, and of course, I've asked him about Atlanta (city) and situation in the team. Of course, Ilya wants me to join the team (laughing). We could be a nice company (laughing). I played with Antropov in the Rangers last season, even shared the hotel room with him. There is also Slava Kozlov. Probably I will sign with the Thrashers for one year - first I need to look around and check things out.

Wait - what? Huh? Someone sees the players we have here and WANTS TO PLAY HERE? No. Freaking. Way. What a shock.

/sarc

Seriously, this is pretty good news despite the fact that this means possibly re-tweaking the lines/not letting a kid play this season/shipping players off. Why do we have to ship players off if we're under the salary cap this year, you ask? Revenue sharing. If a team exceeds a certain amount of money spent on the cap, they don't qualify. Zherdev is expected to come with a hefty contract.

Hey, wait! I think I see a chance to save my career!

That news dovetails with the speculation from Andy Strickland that Manny Legace has been invited to the Thrashers' training camp week after next. We have five guys worth of depth in goal: Lehtonen, Hedberg, Pavelec, Mannio, and MacIntyre. Two of those are probable AHLers, and were specifically signed by Waddell this off-season for a reason: to fill Turple's hole as backup, and to possibly step in as the Wolves' #1 if something happened with Pavelec (injury,call-up, etc).

No, the shattered pieces of my groin/hopes and dreams of Thrashers fans are over *there.*

We're now having to work Kari's injury prone self into how to keep under the cap. Well, his $3 million or so salary would be more expensive than anyone else's. He just had back surgery. He has a SplodeyGroin. He has been known to be pouty when pulled from a game for the team's good. Occasionally he'll perform poorly for games that start before 7:00 EST (apparently he doesn't like to wake up early). If we want to do well this year, we need a goalie who can stay healthy all season and play strongly. The games that Kari missed last season contained some close scoring matches that frankly, I believe had he played in them, we probably would have won.

Manny is experienced and still has some gas in the tank. Don't put him into a situation where he has to deal with horrible direct competition (a la Mason last season), and he should be at least mentally ok. Keep him away from Sarah Palin and carpets, and he's golden. Oh, and he'd probably be about a million dollar cap hit, so there's that, too.

Couldn't've said it better myself.

Thrashers fans are pretty tired of everyone saying why Kovy's set to leave this year. The people who say that probably haven't looked at the team and circumstances past the end of the year standings. The people who follow the team, well, we can see some pretty special stuff.

My bud Brian over at The Hockey Writers (hi, coworker!) has written an excellent top ten list of reasons that Kovy's butt is staying put. Ben, from the Blueland Blog, got roped into the View from My Seats Southeast preview, and has some pretty good insight from someone who is around the guys a lot.

Sorry, naysayers. I really don't see much doom and gloom in our future this season. Go back to circling around Phoenix.
